The United Kingdom is one of the most nature-depleted countries in the developed world. Britain has lost 97% of its wildflower meadows since the 1930’s, around 80% of its peatlands are degraded, and the 2023 State of Nature report found that the average abundance of 753 monitored terrestrial and freshwater species has declined by 19% since monitoring began in 1970. This is not inevitable. It is the result of decades of policy choices, economic incentives and land management practices, many of them predating any recent government. These can now be changed.
